Projections of Ourselves is a collection of three video installations (Seen/Unseen, Captured Breath, Radiant Skins) that were create to span three adjacent walls in an exhibition space. Running on loop one at a time, each of the pieces draws from the experience of being able to sense human connection. My desire to visualize these intangible connections has led me to make works that capture the wonder of beholding something that is hidden inside us.
By creating sculptural extensions of the body, I am able to accentuate physical manifestations of our innermost thoughts, feelings, and reactions to others. The use of video allows me to track the movements of these corporeal extensions and direct the perspective of the viewer. By approaching video from the viewpoint of a sculptor, materiality and depth become key concerns in the work. Here, video becomes a dualistic lens which can present a fantastical truth, one that is simultaneously accurate and surreal.
